The Supporting Ukrainian Editorial Staff collective was formed in March 2022, shortly after the beginning of the Russian invasion, in response to requests for support from our scientific publishing colleagues: due to the destruction of certain infrastructure and the interruption of public subsidies, they were facing great difficulties in pursuing their publications. After launching a crowdfunding campaign and helping 45 journals, the SUES collective wants to create new forms of exchange between publishers and journals.
In 2022, €73,000 was raised, which helped 45 Ukrainian journals in all disciplines. The SUES4Journals programme is a continuation of this movement, developing new exchanges between publishing professionals from France and Ukraine, while respecting the standards, customs and practices of each.
Supporting Ukrainian journals
The SUES4Journals project aims at building links between publishers and creating exchanges between journals. These interactions can take different forms: exchange of articles, twinning, webinars, etc. The SUES collective can play an intermediary role but does not get involved in the exchanges between journals. Once contact has been established, the journals are free to organise themselves as they wish. SUES may be involved from time to time on certain projects if the two journals so wish, but does not ask for any right of supervision or interference.
In the case of publication, an introductory note may be included stating, for example, “This article originally appeared in … is published in … as part of the Supporting Ukrainian Editorial Staff … (SUES4Journals) initiative, a journal-to-journal support programme”.
Examples of actions
Each journal is free to choose its support principle. For example :
- translation and publication of a foreign article
- exchange of articles for publication
- organisation of workshops or webinars, …
- exchange of good practice, production of documents…
