Among the 10 first journals to receive financial support from the SUES collective was the journal Technical Sciences and Technologies, that was able to publish their second issue for this current year. Congratulations to the team!
As part of the SUES initiative, Rémy Ienco will take part to the symposium Smart Lion, organised by Oksana Zayachkivska from the journal Proceedings of the Shevchenko Scientific Society. Medical Sciences. The name of the presentation will be Supporting, indexing and wide-spreading ukrainian journals in medical sciences, consisting of a short speech to introduce the SUES program. Alongside, Agnès Henri from EDP Science will be giving an introduction to Medline & PubMed that could be of some interest to the editors in the audience.
We thank Oksana and the editorial board for their invitation!
After the end of our summer school in August and early September (anyone interested may find the programs and recordings here), the SUES collective is organising a mutual learning session about journal publishing. Our aim will be to introduce and present 3 levels of scientific publishing in Ukraine and in France: a single journal, regional hubs, national platforms. The session will take place through Zoom, on October the 5th, 14:00-16:00 Paris time, 15:00-17:00 Kyiv time. The language spoken will be English.
During these two hours, each participant will give a short presentation of their work, followed by a time of exchanges and chat with the colleagues in the audience. Any problem you meet, any success you achieved would be of a huge interest for everyone. Don’t hesitate to join us!
As summer reaches its end, the scientific committee delivered the full list of Ukrainian journals the SUES program will be able to help. From social sciences to biology or technologies, many scholarly fields are represented.
The committee took under consideration 114 journals whose statement of needs was submitted via SUES web form by the end of June. The goal was to add 35 new journals to the list of ten already published during the crowdfunding campaign. The evaluation was conducted iteratively, according to the criteria reflecting the general principles of SUES, especially ensuring that the help will go to the journals in need, and planning a wider cooperation with SUES partners. We took into consideration the journal’s history, recent issues, open access policy/plans, presence in journal indexes, location in regions directly affected by the war, interest in further cooperation with SUES partners, expression of needs. We also acknowledged that also journals from regions not directly affected need support, hence we tried to ensure that the funding reaches as many institutions as possible. The choice was extremely difficult given the circumstances and general quality of the journals.
The current SUES actions are a temporary measure and a pilot programme for a more sustainable action. We call upon the European Commission and ministries of science of the European countries to provide funds for a more comprehensive support programme. The SUES team is open for discussing the further expansion of this programme with funding institutions.
Viktor Stepanenko, the editor-in-chief, also gave us a short statement of the improvements the journal was able to achieve, thanks to the funds and support from the SUES:
This year, the team has continued to upload the whole content of issue on their website for free access ─ before that, they used to publish the paper abstracts and keep a half a year time gap with uploading the texts in full-access (this was mostly due to the journal subscription that was small but steady)
Part of the cost for printing the issue (120 copies) was covered from the grant money
Some money was also used as small financial allowances for some colleagues at the editorial board ─ for example 100 Euro was passed for the junior editorial assistant Anna Rudnicka, who recently gave the birth.
The team is now working on the third issue of 2022, don’t hesitate to follow them up!
Thanks to our donors and everyone’s support to the SUES program, the journal Scientific Notes of H.S. Skovoroda KhNPU. Literary Studies (1st tome, 2022, n°99) has been published on the Kharkiv University website !
It is in full open access, so don’t hesitate to have a look & share the content.
